Charles Jack Smith, age 96, formerly of White Oak, died May 3, 2017 at UPMC East Hospital in Monroeville. Born October 20, 1920, “Jack” was the son of Wesley L. and Carrie Fisher Schroth Smith, of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his daughter Charlene M. Jackson formerly of North Versailles. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. Jack worked as a serviceman for Peoples Natural Gas Company for thirty-three years until his retirement in 1982. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 27 years, Katherine Julia (Hornfeck) Smith, and his brother Wesley L. Smith, Jr., sisters Helen Semple and Lillie Voigt. Jack was a 1939 graduate of Brentwood High School and a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was very handy and had a love of antique clocks, restoring, and collecting many over the years. Jack had a strong interest in genealogy and researched and documented his and Katherine’s family histories. He also dedicated his time for many years to the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center. His work at the Heritage Center included documenting census data and obituaries. Those who research the Heritage Center archives will enjoy the benefits of his labor. Jack will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Family and friends will gather at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation & Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, McKeesport, PA 15131 on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 11:00 am until 12:00 when interment with military honors will take place at Saint Mary’s German Cemetery.
