Donald E. Smail, 88, of Kittanning Twp., PA, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 29, 1930, in Kittanning Twp., to Charles P. and Della E. (Baum) Smail.
Don lived in the Blanket Hill area all of his life and graduated from Kittanning High School in 1949. He honorably served as a control tower operator in the US Air Force during the Korean War. For 37 years, Don worked as a crane operator at Adams Steel Erection, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local #66 and the Kittanning Elks Lodge #203. Don also belonged to American Legion Post #122 of Kittanning, Seneca Masonic Lodge #805 of Kittanning, the New Castle Consistory and the NRA. His faith was very important to him and Don was a lifelong member of Whitesburg United Methodist Church. Don was active on various committees and helped build the current church. He also was in charge of the Whitesburg United Methodist Cemetery for many years.
In his free time, Don could often be found enjoying the great outdoors. His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, birdwatching and playing golf. Don also loved flowers and took great care of his beautiful gardens. He was happiest when simply at his home in Blanket Hill, spending time with his wife and family.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Yvonne E. (Peters) Smail, whom he married September 22, 1956; sons, Timothy E. Smail and wife, Tamra, of Apollo, David T. Smail and wife, Lisa, of Kittanning, and Randall M. Smail and wife, Rebecca, of Pittsburgh; daughter, Lisa R. Blair and husband, Larry, of Kittanning; grandchildren, Alissa Meyer and husband, Cody, Kelsey Pfeister and husband, Chris, Brianne Smail, Brandon Smail, Cameron Smail, Matthew Smail, Sean Smail, Kyle Smail, Brittany McLaughlin and husband, Jonathon, Laura Blair and Megan Blair; five great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Donald Duzen.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles P. Smail, Jr. and Delmar Smail; and sister, Wilma Duzen.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at the Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 515 N. McKean Street, Kittanning, PA.
Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at Whitesburg United Methodist Church, 12127 US 422, Kittanning, with the Rev. Ernie DeLuca officiating.
Interment will follow at Whitesburg United Methodist Cemetery, Whitesburg, PA, where military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
