Edward G. Babyak, age 86, of White Oak, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2021. He was born in McKeesport on Aug. 16, 1935 and is the son of the late George and Caroline Vukelic Babyak. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Babyak.
Ed is survived by his wife, Charlotte Cox Babyak, sons, Jeffrey Babyak of Turtle Creek, PA and Retired Col. David (Merleann) Babyak of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chelsea (Justin) Pons, Zoey Babyak, and Tyler Toumbacaris, and great grandchild, Gemma Pons.
He graduated from McKeesport Vocational High School in 1953 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1957. He was a Korean veteran and completed his last fourteen months duty in the Marine Barracks in Washington D.C. He was a Sgt. Honor Guard.
Ed was employed as an electrical draftsman in the construction of steel mills. He was also employed at Auburn and Assoc. from 1959 until 1966 and then employed at Swindell Dresser (a division of Pullman) from 1966 until 1969. He was employed part time in the Turtle Creek Police department and the Volunteer Fire Department from 1960 until 1975. His police duties were Desk Sgt., Dispatcher, Warden Fire Truck Driver. At the Volunteer Fire Dept. he served as the secretary and also the president. Ed was the founder and charter member of the Turtle Creek Rescue and Ambulance Service and was elected as first chief and president.
From 1969 until 1975 he served as a Utility Deputy at the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office. Ed was capable of undertaking any and all jobs required of any deputy. From 1975 until 2000 Ed served with the White Oak Police Department. He was promoted to Sgt. and was also a Crime Prevention Officer.
Ed served on the White Oak Council from 2001 until 2020 where he served in many different capacities including president. He was a member of the White Oak American Legion, Post 701 and the McKeesport Amvets Post 8.
Friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412 678 6177) on Thursday, September 9, 2021 from 2:00 until 4:00 and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Mother of God Parish, St. Angela Church, Fawcett Avenue, White Oak, PA 15131. Entombment will follow with Military Honors.
