Margaret “Marge” L. Valoon Osterman, age 97 and 11 months, of North Huntingdon, formerly of Port Vue, died Thursday, July 22, 2021 of natural causes at The Grove Skilled Nursing Facility in North Huntingdon. She was born in McKeesport on August 17, 1923 and is the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Josephine Edwards Valoon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Leonard W. Osterman, who died on March 28, 2000; sisters, Ruth Dressler; Joanne Wisser; and brother, Jack Valoon. Margaret leaves behind a large, loving family which includes her daughter, Carol (Richard) Andrews of Greensburg; sons, Jack (Patricia) Osterman of North Huntingdon; Robert (Stacey) Osterman of Port Vue; James (Sharon) Osterman of Harrisburg; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a niece and nephews.
Margaret often called “Margie” was a good/faithful friend to many through the years. She belonged to a diverse group of organizations/clubs. She was a caregiver and an ardent volunteer.
In her younger days, she was a member of the Port Vue PTA/Past President. She was active during all four of her children’s Elementary School years who were all born 4 years apart. She was a very active member of the South Allegheny High School Band Parents/12 years for 3 sons. In 1984, at the age of 62, Marge along with the help of the Port Vue Clergy founded and was the volunteer coordinator for the National Steelworkers Oldtimers Foundation “Home Delivered Meals Program” for Port Vue, Liberty, and Lincoln Boroughs. Marge was determined to find a way to see shut-ins and those unable to make meals for themselves would have the food they needed.
Marge was a member of the Port Vue Senior Citizens group where she served on various committees, including photographer/historian. She was a member of the McKeesport Hospital Women’s Auxiliary as well as the Port Vue Women’s Club. She belonged to card clubs too. She said, “It was good times with great friends.” As a member of the Port Vue United Methodist Church since 1949, Marge served as a Sunday School Teacher, Church Nursery Coordinator, Vacation Bible School Superintendent, Head Trustee, Usher, and Greeter. Her heart truly belonged to the FOD/Women’s group of the church. She spent many hours volunteering on projects with fellow members/friends. She was always a part of the Infamous NUT ROLL SALE. At age 85, after recovering from a serious health problem, she relearned the PA Driver’s Manual, took the computerized pretest (her only computer experience) and then passed the road test, including parallel parking.
Marge lived a very full life. She always said she was Greatly Blessed. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
