A funeral director in McKeesport, PA for 45 years, widely known throughout the area was the president of the Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler funeral home. He died at the age of 70 at his home on Huey Street. He was a member of the McKeesport Housing Authority, President of the McKeesport Mortgage Company, and Director of the McKeesport Community Savings and Loan Association. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and was a member of the Captain John C. Gregg Camp/Spanish War Veterans. Mr. Striffler also was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, the parish church committee, and Holy Name Society. He was a member of many other catholic organizations including, The McKeesport Knights of Columbus #955, Fourth Degree, The University Catholic Club of Pittsburgh, The Youghiogheny Country Club, NO 285 B.P.O Eagles, McKeesport Lodge NO. 138, B.P.O. Elks, The McKeesport Rotary Club, The National Funeral Directors Association, and The Allegheny County Funeral Directors Association. He also served on the McKeesport Rationing Board. He was born in Meadville, PA on January 28, 1876, a son of the late Frank Adam and Helen Michel Striffler. He is survived by his wife, Emma Sautter Striffler, daughter, Mrs. Charles (Patricia) C. Hassel of McKeesport, one granddaughter, sisters Margaret B. Carew of McKeesport, and Mrs. J. H. Peters of Windsor Ontario, Canada, and one brother, Edgar Jacob Striffler with whom he had been associated in business within McKeesport. Friends were received at the Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler Funeral Home and a requiem Mass was held in St. Peter's Church in McKeesport by the Rev. Patrick J. O'Connor. Burial followed. Edgar Jacob Striffler, age 71, a funeral director for 53 years and a well-known civic leader, died at his residence in, White Oak. Mr. Striffler, whose father, the late Frank Adam Striffler (a long-time undertaker in Meadville, PA) joined his brother the late Frank Sebastian Striffler, in the operation of Striffler Brothers Funeral Home in McKeesport following his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh in 1912.

In 1927, Mr. Striffler and his brother merged their firm with Hunter and Edmundson to form the present company of Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler. Mr. Striffler served as president.  He founded Striffler’s of White Oak in 1956 in conjunction with his son, Frank Sheridan Striffler. He was a member of the National Selected Morticians, the Order of the Golden Rule, St. Angela’s Merici Roman Catholic Church of White Oak and its Holy Name Society; the Youghiogheny Country Club; B.P.O. Elks, Lodge 136; and McKeesport Aerie 285, Fraternal Order of Eagles. He had served as the Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus, McKeesport Council 955, and, in 1934 as president of the McKeesport Kiwanis Club. As a young man, he was active in athletics. He was also considered one of the area’s contract bridge players. Mr. Striffler was born in Meadville, PA, the son of the late Frank Adam and Helen Michel Striffler. He was survived by his wife, Hilda Sheridan Striffler; sons, Edgar Jacob Striffler, Jr. who resided in Washington, D.C., Frank Sheridan Striffler who resided in White Oak and Stephen J. who was still at home; daughters, Mrs. John (Ferne) Erskine who was at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia, and Mrs. Vernon (Gail) Posey who resided in Miami, FL.; 14 grandchildren; and a sister, Clara Peters who resided in McKeesport.

Friends were received at the Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler Funeral Home. A solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Leo A. McCrory officiating. Interment followed.

Frank Sheridan Striffler was the firm's president from 1965 until his death in 2006. He maintained a wonderful business reputation with full-time commitment. He gave back to his community in so many ways.

Frank S. was born on November 19th, 1928 in McKeesport, the son of the late Edgar Jacob and Hilda Sheridan Striffler. He graduated from McKeesport High School in 1946 and was vice president of his class at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. He then enrolled at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science where he served as class president. He then received his certification as a Certified Cemetery Executive from the American Cemetery Association School of Management at Memphis State University. He also attended the National Foundation of Funeral Service Management Policy School.

Mr. Striffler was a member, by invitation, to the Bundesverband Deutscher Bestatter Society of German Funeral Directors, the Selected Independent Funeral Directors Association, the Order of the Golden Rule and the Sphinx Club of Western PA Funeral Directors. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus #955 and the Amvets Post #8. He was a former president and founding member of the White Oak Lion’s Club, a charter member of the White Oak Athletic Association Board of Governors and a past board member of the McKeesport Business District Authority. He was also a member of the PA Funeral Directors Association and Monument Builders of Pennsylvania.

In 1973, he donated the first ambulance ever owned by White Oak Rescue and had an affinity for antique vehicles that he maintained. His favorite was the 1938 LaSalle hearse, even though the predominant memory of it was being “hot as the dickens with lots of traffic”. A crowd-pleaser at parades is the horse-drawn hearse from 1866, (the firm’s founding year), which was acquired from a farmer in the '60s. His 1956 Cadillac hearse has taken the horse’s job of pulling it in the parade. Mr. Striffler died on March 26, 2006 and was survived by his loyal wife, Patricia Anne Connelly Striffler, children, Edgar Patrick Striffler, Esquire and Sue Striffler (Steve) Galaski and grandson, Adam Striffler Galaski all of White Oak.  He was also survived by his siblings; Gail (the late Vernon) Posey of Plantation, Florida, Ferne (the late John) Erskin of Washington, D.C. and Stephen J. (Anne) Striffler of Watsonville, California.  He was preceded in death by his brother; Edgar "Bye" Striffler in 1993 and his son; Frank Connelly Striffler on April 23, 2005.

Friends were received at Striffler's of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St.Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Market Street in McKeesport. Entombment was held in the family mausoleum.
